Florida Georgia Line Memphis 2015 Recap

Nathan Armstrong

With cold weather approaching, it was only appropriate that we had one last night of summer right when Florida Georgia Line came into town. The feel good country duo brought along up-and-comers Frankie Ballard and Thomas Rhett for their Anything Goes tour. With Kix 106 promoting the show, Southaven saw a near-sold out crowd at their Bankplus Ampitheatre.

Opener Frankie Ballard set things off with his nostalgic old-school sound, performing hits like “Young and Crazy,” “Sunshine and Whiskey,” and “Helluva Life.” With a cherry red gibson around his neck, Ballard took to the mic and said, “I know I don’t have to ask this in Memphis, but do y’all feel like dancin’?” I mean, it was in Southaven, but the answer was still the same as Ballard broke into a blues boogie as he covered a little ZZ Top and some George Thorogood. The southern soul set the mood for Thomas Rhett to take the stage.

With Ballard out and Rhett on, the party officially kicked off. Rhett, dressed in flashy leather pants, is a new taste of country music and even showed his fun side when he performed his song, “South Side.” The country heartthrob had no hesitation as he introduced his wife to the audience and, although some in attendance may be disappointed, it was a heart warming moment. With a big smile and a little country twang, Rhett showed why he is the next big thing for country music.

And then it was time. Now, let me tell you, I’m not the biggest Florida Georgia Line fan. I really wouldn’t even identify as a fan, BUT I did know all their songs and, for what it was, I think it was pretty good. The duo came out.. I mean.. ahem, sprung out of the stage. I mean they literally shot out from underground and landed on stage. I don’t care if you hate a band with all that you have, shooting from underground is pretty cool.

FGL played their hits and went from partying with songs like, “Round Here,” “Get Your Shine On” to slowing it down and connecting with their fans with, “Dirt,” and “Confession.” The flashy party country duo upheld their standard of breaking the mold and unofficially threw, “the biggest party Mississippi has ever seen.” They even gave the crowd a little more and played what they called a mixtape, full of songs that inspired them. As you can imagine, the song selection was just as versatile as the band itself. (you can see the full setlist down below)

All in all, the night couldn’t have seen a better turnout. From great weather to fun music, it was an ideal southern night in Mississippi. And, to no surprise, the tour titled, “Anything Goes,” led to a night full of good vibes, parties, and countless sing-a-longs. FGL even brought out Frankie Ballard and Thomas Rhett to play a couple songs. If the question FGL asks is, “Where My Party People At?” then there’s only one answer for Thursday night. Southaven, Mississippi.
