Jordin Sparks & Nathan Sykes Memphis 2015 Recap

Nathan Armstrong

This past Friday, September 11, the weather cooled down and the music heated up at the 2015 Delta Fair and Music Festival. What started off as a rainy, dreary day became a welcoming night to fall weather as opening act Nathan Sykes took the stage.

Sykes, hailing from Gloucester, England, opened up his show accompanied by an acoustic guitar and very quickly made a statement, belting out blues-esque vocal runs and showing everyone in the crowd what he’s made of.

Then, Sykes moved over to play keyboard and showcase his talent as he played his original song, “Over and Over Again.” Before leaving the stage, the England native played his own version of Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor’s “Marvin Gaye” as well as his hit song and debut single, “Kiss Me Quick.”

Although his set was quick, Sykes left a lasting impression on the audience and gave everyone more to look forward to from the young artist. Nathan Sykes released his single “Kiss Me Quick” this summer and is expected to drop his debut album coming soon.

After Sykes’ set, there was a break in performance and the sponsors took time to recognize our troops on such a memorable day. Operation Troop Aid, a charity that benefits troops overseas by sending care packages, was advertised between sets.

Following the charity announcement, the stage was set for headlining performer, Jordin Sparks. Sparks took the stage followed by two backup dancers and her personal DJ, DJ VTech. Coming out to her newly released, “It Ain’t You,” Sparks set the tone for the night.

The former American Idol star showed a different side of herself with new moves, new songs, and a new personality. After bringing in the new, Sparks took it back to her first album and played her hit, “One Step at a Time.” It was like jumping into a time machine, as the crowd relived all the memories of the 2007 song.

Sparks kept the crowd engaged and continued her performance with her songs “Right Here, Right Now,” and “Boyz In The Hood,” both of which came from her newest album. Once again, Sparks took is back to the oldies and played hit song, “Battlefield.”

There was a lull in performance and Sparks went to the crowd and grabbed a cell phone, which lead into a slew of selfies being taken on several audience members’ cell phones. The singer and backup dancers must have taken selfies for about ten minutes, which served as a perfect segue for her next song, “Double-Tap.”

The night was ended in perfect fashion, as Sparks took the crowds breath away with her most popular song, “No Air.” The crowd erupted as the familiar hook seeped through the speakers and it didn’t take long for everyone to sing along.

The 2015 Delta Fair and Music Festival on Friday night was unforgettable. The performances by both Sykes and Sparks made for an incredible atmosphere and 901 Music is proud to have been a part of it. Thank you to both musicians for putting on a great show and especially to Jordin Sparks who was able to answer a few questions after the show.
